The latest update from the Virginia Department of elections shows first-time candidate J.D. Taylor is in second place in the race for Salem City Council, taking less than 200 votes over third-place Independent candidate Jeffrey Nickels.
In an interview, Taylor touched on some of the concerns he’s heard from the community that he hopes to address during his time on City Council.
“The redevelopment is going to be huge, and I think a focused and concerted focus on economic development to replace those manufacturing jobs,” Taylor said. “Those two are going to be of equal importance and of equal standing in the eyes of the electorate, and that’s something we’re going to have to get the ball rolling with.”
Taylor also said he was looking forward to serving the city with a healthy dose of communication and transparency.
“I think it’s just about meeting people where they are, and allowing them to approach you and speak their mind,” he said. “At the same time, telling them what’s what, keeping them up to date.”
Republican incumbent Hunter Holliday led the race on Election Day with just under 27% of votes, while Taylor held about 22%.
Election results will be finalized when announced by local election officials.
